Notes:

The 1880 census gives his occupation as civil engineer. He was a resident of Cowley County, Kansas, when he sued his wife for divorce in 1888.¹ He was living in Arkansas City, Cowley County, by 1895, when he was enumerated in the census there with his wife, Florence, and three children. In Arkansas City he worked for the Traveler, a local newspaper, and was a city engineer, probate officer, and later deputy sheriff. His wife, Florence, died in 1917.² Joseph died of a stroke on 4 Apr 1922.³ He may have married a fourth time, as his obituary refers to his "bereaved wife," but doesn't give her name.

Research Notes:

On 12 Apr 1878, J. H. Matthews wrote a letter to the State Journal (Jefferson City, Missouri), stating that the newspaper got his marriage announcement wrong, and that "I was not married to Miss Ida McDonald last Wednesday; the ceremony took place months before the day named, and your item causes myself and wife a great deal annoyance."⁴

The St. Louis Globe-Democrat announced the marriage of Mr. Jos. H. Matthews and Miss Ida McDonald, 27 Mar 1878, which was a Wednesday. It is possible this is also the incorrect date.⁵

In 1880, Joseph was living in St. Louis with his parents and his wife, Mary I. Matthews, 27 (circa 1853), born St. Louis. He was also enumerated in the 1880 census, living in St. Louis, 20th Ward, Precinct 212, Jos. H. Mathews, 28, born Massachusetts, with his wife, Mary Ida Mathews, 27, born Missouri, his mother in law, Virg. P. McDonald, 56, born Missouri, and btother in law, Paul A. McDonald, 11, born Missouri.

The death record of his son, Harry Matthews, indicates that Harry was born in 1883, St. Louis, and that his parents were Joseph H. Matthews and Ida McDonald, whose name is possibly Mary Ida McDonald or Ida Mary McDonald.⁶

On 14 Feb 1888, Joseph H. Matthews of Cowley County, Kansas, sued his wife, Mary Matthews of St. Louis, for divorce, and for the custody of their infant child, Henry M. Matthews.¹

It would seem that he did not get custody of his son, because in 1900 Ida M. Matthews, born May 1857 in Missouri was living in St. Louis, with her son, Harry M. Matthews, born July 1883 in Missouri. She was also living with her son in St. Louis in 1910, listed as widowed. She may be the Ida May Ott who was born 3 May 1858, and died 18 July 1931 in Indianapolis, Indiana, wife of Louis Ott. Her mother is listed on the death certificate as Virginia McDonald, but other details, such as birth place, name of father, don't match.⁷

In 1895 Joseph was living in Arkansas City, Cowley County, Kansas, with F. B. Matthews, 38, born Illinois, D. O. Matthews, 7, born Texas, A. M. Matthews, 5, born Texas, and R. L. Matthews, 2, born Kansas.

In 1900 Joseph H. Matthews was living in Arkansas City, Cowley County, Kansas, born Oct 1852, Mass, with his wife of five years, Florence, born Feb 1857 in Illinois, no occupation listed, and three children: Daniel O, born July 1888 in Texas, Arthur M, born Mar 1890 in Texas, and Robert L, born June 1892, Kansas, all surname Matthews.

Mrs. Florence B. Matthews, wife of J. H. Matthews, died suddently in Arkansas City, 13 Feb 1917. She was born 6 Feb 1857 in Greenville, Illinois. She had two sons, Arthur M. Matthews of Shawnee Oklahoma, and Robert L. Matthews of Arkansas City, two brothers, Arthur W. Holden, of Stround Okla, and Clifton W. Holden, of Seward, Oklahoma, as well as a sister. She was a doctor, graduating from the University of Michigan in 1881, a professor of anatomy at St. Louse, and a professor of mathematics at Almira College.²
